To Attend or Not To Attend

I may or may not attend a large art opening early this evening. I have already seen the exhibition and I think it’s a good one….well curated across generational lines and referring to artists working within the shifting city of Toronto. Except, this exhibition is happening not so soon after similar Toronto history exhibitions which have been bogged down by questions about representing “the community”, about “why this artist and why not this or that artist”. Now, these in themselves are of course valid questions; but they are always asked by viewers who don’t really read the curatorial statement as well as by artists whining about not being included in the exhibition. So, I may or may not attend this opening because I have limited time remaining on this planet and so I have limited time for people whining about why they or the best friend are not included in any sort of exhibition which is not particularly intended to be a survey.
